Even as the Singapore Petrochemical Complex was expanding on Pulau Ayer Merbau and parts of Pulau Seraya, a parallel development was taking place in the shape of the Jurong Island.
The Singapore government amalgamated the seven southern offshore islands including Pulau Ayer Merbau, into a large petroleum and petrochemical island through landfill and reclamation.
The amalgamated islands were linked to the mainland by a road link at the end of March 1999.
These developments will considerably enhance the core position of the expanded Singapore Petrochemical Complex while allowing the Complex to benefit from the extensive infrastructure synergies which will result from the formation of this large island.
